Learning musical instruments in Hong Kong is expensive. Many parents resort to low-cost teachers, with the idea that the quality of teacher doesn’t matter at the early stages of learning. In reality, the first teacher is probably the most important teacher. It is of utmost importance that students learn to play the right way from day one. Proper breathing, tonguing, embouchure and posture must be observed. Bad habits, once formed, are very difficult, sometimes impossible, to get rid of.
I have taken students who previous learned from other teachers. Almost all of them play with wrong methods/bad habits that were very difficult to correct, despite my best effort. In the end, more money will be spent on correcting those problems than the initial savings with low-cost teachers. Find the best teacher you can afford. You won’t regret it.
